Bill Mai and Cindy Coloma
Bill’s mother was an avid camper, and she developed in her son a love for the outdoors.
Inspired by the Native American “digs” that his mother worked on in the Denver Museum
of Natural History and their many camping jaunts to Maine, the Adirondacks, and numerous
locations in the West, Bill continued to foster his enthusiasm for camping.
Driven by his sense of adventure, Bill did a stint in Pernambuco, Brazil, after college,
working for the Peace Corps on a small rancher’s cooperative. Reminiscent of 1830s New
Mexico, there were no cars and no electricity but an abundance of cattle drives and gunfights
in the streets.
After shaking off the chaps and spurs, Bill donned the vestments of academia to teach
at several colleges around London. In the interim, he composed several short stories and
Unwilling to give up his roots, he continued to camp in England, biking down
old county lanes and camping in farming fields.
Now Bill continues to write screenplays and wonderful books about his love of camping,
including The Best in Tent Camping: Southern California, the series counterpart to this
book. And, of course, he continues to travel extensively on camping and fishing expeditions
around Baja California and California proper.
While Cindy was growing up, her parents often took her and her sister exploring the
mountains of the western states and driving dirt roads to “see where they went.” She’s
camped in old campers, truck beds, tents, primitive cabins, the backseat of a Volkswagen
bug, and sleeping bags beneath the stars.
She has passed her love of the outdoors down to her children, especially her oldest son,
who wanted to try surviving in the Yolla-Bolly Wilderness (his favorite area) for his highschool
senior project. Early snows dampened the idea, however, and Cindy was relieved
though she was proud of his adventurous spirit.
Cindy is the author of several novels (written under the name Cindy Martinusen) set in
Northern California, Europe, and Southeast Asia. She enjoys exploring the regions of her
research firsthand, taking in the cultures and landscapes. But home is most sweet, and since
she was 7 years old Cindy has lived in the Redding area. She continues to live there with
her husband, Nieldon, and their three children.
Cindy continues to write both fiction and nonfiction while also working with published
and aspiring writers on their projects. She and her family regularly enjoy the many outdoor
wonders and activities found in Northern California. For more information about Cindy,
