With more than 30 years of wandering the back roads and back woods of Texas under his belt, Wendel Withrow has compiled a detailed guidebook for all levels of tent campers and outdoor enthusiasts. Wendel is a native Texan and began treks into the woods at a young age.
During his years at the University of Texas at Austin, where he received his B.A. (History) with High Honors in 1976, Wendel began his camping career and a wanderlust that has taken him to the most beautiful parts of Texas. After receiving his law degree from Texas Tech School of Law in 1979, he continued to search out the lesser-known natural wonders throughout Texas and the United States. In 1989, he stumbled on Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey and Wendel’s love for the outdoors was transformed into a crusade to try and save all things wild while any remained to be saved.
Joining The Sierra Club, Wendel used his passion for photography and inspiration from Abbey to rise to the Chair of the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club and is currently the Chair of the Dallas Group of The Sierra Club.
The author continues to seek out lesser-known adventures and is currently researching the Native American tribes of the desert Southwest and the natural wonders located in the sovereign nations of North America’s first citizens.
