Mel Thomas

Mel Thomas is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. During her senior season at Mount Notre Dame High School, she led her team to a perfect 28-0 record and the school’s first Division I Ohio State Basketball Championship. Mel joined the UConn Huskies in 2004, where she continued the tradition of UConn women's basketball student-athletes who have succeeded at the highest levels both academically and athletically. Mel was a three-time Big East Academic All-Star, and is a graduate of UConn's highly-regarded School of Business. Mel was named co-captain of her team in both her junior and senior seasons. In her senior year, she played a key role in UConn winning the Big East regular season and tournament championships, and in their run to the NCAA Final Four. Mel finished her career with 1,098 points and ranked fourth in UConn history in three-pointers made with 224. Mel was a member of the United States Pan American Games team in the summer of 2007 as the U.S. won the gold medal for the first time since 1987. Mel is currently playing professional basketball for the Waterford Wildcats in the Irish Basketball League.

     Heart of a Husky
is a unique book in the history of collegiate sports. Drawn from the daily journal of an active player, it welcomes readers to places and events not open to even the most privileged of fans. Mel shares every facet of her life as a student-athlete; and she pulls no punches. She shines a bright light on relationships with teammates and coaches, the most difficult days of physical training, team meetings and locker room talks, tears and cheers in players’ apartments, team dinners at her coach’s home, travel experiences, and even weddings. This all adds up to a fascinating journey for players, coaches, parents and fans of all sports.

It is a gift to all who are interested in athletics, that Mel has shared her love for basketball with a national audience. Kudos to her—for having the foresight to start her journal, the eloquence to make it sing, and the determination to bring it to publication.

"Mel Thomas exemplifies all the best values and lessons of sport. She is a hard worker, a loyal teammate, and a perfectionist in every area of her life. Coaches from elementary schools to the pros should encourage their athletes to read Mel’s story."
Rebecca Lobo – National Collegiate Player of the Year, 1995 Gold Medalist, USA Olympic Basketball Team, 1996

"In Heart of a Husky, Mel Thomas captures the essence of what it’s like to play for Geno Auriemma and the UConn Huskies. Mel has a wonderful sense of humor that runs all through her book. Many of the stories she tells about her coaches and teammates left me laughing out loud."
Diana Taurasi – Two-time National Collegiate Player of the Year. Gold Medalist, USA Olympic Basketball Team, 2004 – 2008.
